The National Steinbeck Center faced an ongoing problem with the demographic discrepancy between local residents and the majority of visitors, who often hail from farther afield. To address this issue, the NSC designed a program to present opportunities for local children from Salinas, California, who are disproportionately low income and Latino, to explore the arts and humanities. Analyses revealed that families with children attending the program rated the arts and the NSC as more important.
