Today’s Kuwait Teens: Tomorrow’s International Museum Professionals?
Museums are still “foreign” places to many in the Middle East. This case study will discuss the program structure, successes and challenges of Kuwait’s Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah high school volunteer program, first launched in 2012. It will look at the program from a cultural context, showing how it promotes volunteerism and the exploration of museums and related careers; builds confidence in self-identity by celebrating the region’s cultural heritage; and develops critical-thinking skills.
New Beginnings: Empowering First Generation of Professionals
This session will share lessons learned from initiating the first Professional Development Program for the staff of Abu Dhabi’s existing museum and those preparing for the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi (2015), Zayed National Museum (2016) and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (2017). The session will provide examples of best practices based on multiple customized approaches and collaborations with local institutions and international experts.
