The National Building Museum’s 2012-2015 drive to fill galleries and attract visitors blossomed into a genuine blockbuster experience, where music, food, and family-friendly fun surrounded unique interactive installations: Mini Golf, the BIG Maze, and the BEACH. In this session, you can reflect with the museum’s director and senior staff as we consider our evolving, experimental approach and the question, “Where do we go from here?” Media, attendance, and revenue tell us we are an undisputed success—but at what cost to visitor services staff, exhibitions & education programs, and our sanity? Do summer visitors understand our mission? Will they see us as more than just a playful attraction? What is the power of spectacle for museums—and is it worth it?
